Our Mission

Oshkosh Youth Soccer Club seeks to provide a positive athletic opportunity for children from age 4 to age 19. Young people participate as players, coaches and referees learning sportsmanship and life lessons through soccer. The Oshkosh Youth Soccer Club is a non-profit, recreational youth sports program, operating in the Winnebago County, Wisconsin area since 1979. The youth and their enjoyment of playing, as they are learning the game, is the primary objective of the program. The Club strives to put an emphasis on learning and having fun vs. winning or losing. It has been a consistent policy of the OYSC Board of Directors to provide a soccer experience to as wide a range of youth as possible. Every player has the right to play regardless of their skill level.

How does your organization make a difference in your community? Soccer provides a positive outlet for young people's energy. Players learn teamwork, soccer skills, sportsmanship, and respect for authority (coaches and officials) from coaches who strive to be good role models. The coaches for older players (frequently former players from OYSC) often also become mentors, providing a more mature perspective on teenage issues from a non-parent. Older players become coaches for younger teams, continuing the tradition. They learn how to teach younger players, work with parents, and do administrative tasks. Teenage players also become officials, learning objectivity and people management skills in addition to the Laws of the Game. Because soccer is a relatively low cost sport, some families register their children with Oshkosh Youth Soccer Club because it is the only activity that is affordable, especially for those with multiple children. The community benefits through the development of good citizens who direct their energy in positive ways.

How will Nike impact your community by investing in it? Nike's investment will allow Oshkosh Youth Soccer Club to continue to offer affordable registration fees to players. Soccer can be a lifelong activity as a player, coach, official and spectator as evidenced by the huge growth in the sport. Young people involved in Oshkosh Youth Soccer have a positive outlet for their energy. They see good role models in their coaches and referees and strive to become role models for younger players. Soccer becomes a family activity with entire families spending time together around a soccer practice, game or tournament.
