Our Mission

SkateLife Memphis seeks to promote a healthier Memphis by serving as an advocate for public skate parks and the skateboarding community. It seeks to demonstrate two core benefits associated with the activity: skateboarding is a much-needed positive physical outlet for Memphis youth and physically active adults and secondly, skateboarding is a unique activity that naturally forms friendships among youth coming from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds.

How does your organization make a difference in your community? Skatelife Memphis has introduced skateboarding, to the N. Memphis Community. We have partnered with Golden Child Ministries which runs its program out of the N. Memphis Greenlaw community center. With this new activity, youth in the N. Memphis area have the opportunity to learn new balance skills and be exposed to an activity that appeals to youth who are not drawn to conventional team sports. One of our long term goals is to combat high obesity rates among our Memphis youth with an intense and positively addicting physical activity. Our other goal is to promote inter-racial friendships formed around a common passion for skateboarding. Skateboarding is a unique and powerful tool that effectively does this. Consequently, skateboarding possesses one of the most naturally diverse demographics among it's participants.

How will Nike impact your community by investing in it? There are NO skate parks in our city which means we have to drive the youth 15-20 miles to the nearest skate park. With limited cars, we can only take two or three youth at a time. With the Nike grant, we will be able to build some ramps at the community center. This will allow 15-20 youth to participate rather than only a few youth. We will also be able to purchase more skate boards and protective equipment for the kids. Thus, the grant will have a major impact on the number of youth we will be able to work with and teach. Also, youth will be able to skate daily rather then just a few times a month.
